The Firebird

by Arthur Ransome

A young archer serving a powerful Tzar is tasked with retrieving a magical golden feather from the Fire-Bird, despite his wise horse's warnings. He ignores the advice and takes the feather, which earns him the dangerous mission to capture the bird itself. The archer relies on his supernatural Horse of Power to trap the fiery creature in a field scattered with maize. Upon presenting the bird, the Tzar demands he bring back the Princess Vasilissa from the edge of the world as his bride. The archer accepts this new quest and travels to the distant land where the sun rises over the sea. He sets up a lavish tent to lure the Princess, who arrives in her silver boat and is captured by drinking enchanted wine. After bringing her to the palace, the angry Tzar demands the Princess's wedding dress from the bottom of the deep blue sea as a condition for the marriage. The archer faces another perilous task, but the Horse of Power subdues the Tzar of Lobsters to retrieve the casket containing the dress. When the Princess refuses to marry the old Tzar, he orders the young archer to be boiled alive in a cauldron as punishment. Before his death, the archer is allowed to say goodbye to his loyal horse, who tells him to leap into the water without fear. He jumps in and emerges transformed into a handsome youth, while the greedy Tzar tries to do the same and perishes. The young archer becomes the new ruler, marries the Princess, and lives happily ever after with his faithful steed.

How it begins

And among his servants was a young archer, and this archer had a horse--a horse of power--such a horse as belonged to the wonderful men of long ago--a great horse with a broad chest, eyes like fire, and hoofs of iron. There are no such horses nowadays. They sleep with the strong men who rode them, the bogatirs, until the time comes when Russia has need of them. Then the great horses will thunder up from under the ground, and the valiant men leap from the graves in the armour they have worn so long…
