Perseus and Medusa

by Andrew Lang

A fearful King locks his daughter in a brass prison to avoid a prophecy that her son will kill him. When she bears a baby boy, the angry King casts them into a chest on the sea. They drift until they reach an island where a kind man raises the boy. The King of that island tricks the young man into fetching the Terrible Head as a wedding gift for his sister. The boy sets off on a perilous journey to fulfill his oath. He meets magical helpers who give him shoes that let him fly. He sneaks into a cave to steal an eye from three Gray Sisters. They tell him where to find magical items needed for the quest. He visits Fairies who provide a sword and an invisible cap. With these tools, he locates the dreadful women guarding the head. He uses a shield as a mirror to avoid being turned to stone. He cuts off the youngest woman's head and escapes their angry chase. On his way back, he saves a princess chained by the sea from a sea monster. He uses the Terrible Head to turn the beast into stone. He returns the rescued princess to her father and wins her hand in marriage. He flies home to face his wicked grandfather who still threatens his mother. The King strikes at him but is turned to stone by the head. The boy refuses the throne, letting his adoptive father rule instead. He reunites with his mother and sets sail for her homeland. Their journey fulfills the original prophecy in an unexpected way. The family lives happily ever after in their rightful kingdom.

This news terrified him so much that he determined never to let his daughter be married, for he thought it was better to have no grandson at all than to be killed by his grandson. He therefore called his workmen together, and bade them dig a deep round hole in the earth, and then he had a prison of brass built in the hole, and…
