Toads and Diamonds
A kind-hearted youngest daughter endures cruel treatment from her proud mother and selfish elder sister in a humble household. Tasked with fetching water daily, she shows unexpected generosity to a poor woman who is actually a Fairy in disguise. As a reward for her politeness, the Fairy grants her the magical gift of speaking flowers and jewels. When her mother discovers this treasure, she forces her rude eldest daughter to seek the same fortune. The pert hussy approaches the Fairy with arrogance and insults, expecting luxury rather than service. Her bad manners anger the Fairy, who curses her to speak snakes and toads instead of gems. Terrified by the monstrous output from her mouth, the mother turns on her own creation in horror. The youngest daughter flees her abusive home to escape the ensuing chaos and blame. Wandering into the forest, she encounters a King’s son who is captivated by her beauty and kindness. He witnesses her miraculous gifts and recognizes her noble spirit amidst the hardship. Convinced that her virtue outweighs any material wealth, he invites her to his palace. They fall in love quickly, leading to a wedding that brings joy and security to the young woman. Meanwhile, the elder sister’s reputation is ruined by her curse, leaving her isolated and despised. Without anyone to take her in, she wanders aimlessly through the woods in despair. Her selfishness ultimately leads to her lonely death in a forest corner. The story concludes with the youngest daughter living happily as a royal bride.
