Kintaro, the Golden Boy
In the lonely Ashigara Mountains, a boy named Kintaro grows up with extraordinary strength alongside his devoted animal friends, including a bear, a deer, a monkey, and a hare. He spends his days playing in the forest and helping woodcutters, eventually teaching them to wrestle and compete for rice dumplings. One day, while crossing a river, he demonstrates his power by pulling up a massive tree to create a bridge for himself and his furry companions. A mysterious old woodcutter witnesses this feat and follows Kintaro home to investigate the source of such prodigious strength. The woodcutter challenges Kintaro to an arm-wrestling match, which ends in a draw, confirming the boy's incredible physical prowess. He then reveals his true identity as General Sadamitsu, who has been searching for talented boys to serve Lord Minamoto-no-Raiko. Sadamitsu asks Kintaro's mother for permission to take her son to the Capital to train as a samurai. Although sad to leave him, she agrees, hoping it will lead to the life of honor he deserves. Kintaro bids a tearful farewell to his mother and his animal companions, who watch him go from the treetops. Upon arriving at the Capital, he is immediately accepted into Lord Raiko's army as one of the Four Braves. His first great test comes when a terrifying cannibal monster terrorizes the nearby villages. Kintaro bravely confronts the beast in its den and defeats it with his sword, bringing peace to the land. He rises to become the Chief of the Four Braves, gaining immense fame and wealth. True to his word, he builds a luxurious home for his mother, ensuring she lives in comfort and joy for the rest of her days. Kintaro transforms from a wild mountain boy into a celebrated hero who honors his family and serves his country with courage.
