Urashima Taro

by Yei Theodora Ozaki

Urashima Taro is a skilled and incredibly kind fisherman who lives in a quiet Japanese village. One day, he sees some cruel boys tormenting a small tortoise on the shore. Feeling sorry for the creature, he gently persuades the boys to let him buy the tortoise's freedom with his money. He releases the animal back into the sea, wishing it safety and a long life. The next morning, while fishing alone, Urashima hears his name called by a voice from the water. To his surprise, the rescued tortoise appears and reveals that it was actually the Sea King's daughter in disguise. She invites him to visit her underwater palace as a reward for his kindness. The tortoise grows large enough for Urashima to ride on its back and dives into the deep blue sea. They arrive at the magnificent Rin Gin Palace, where they are welcomed by fish and courtiers. Urashima meets the beautiful Princess, who asks him to stay with her forever in a land of eternal youth. He happily accepts her offer and enjoys feasts, music, and wonders for what feels like only three days. However, he suddenly remembers his elderly parents and feels a deep duty to return home. The Princess sadly agrees to send him back but gives him a precious lacquer box with one strict warning: never open it. Urashima rides the tortoise back to the shore, eager to see his family again. When he arrives, he finds that three hundred years have passed and everyone he knew is gone. In his grief and confusion, he decides to break the Princess's rule and opens the box. A purple cloud emerges, causing him to age rapidly and die on the beach. His story serves as a timeless warning about obedience and the passage of time.

His father had been a fisherman before him, and his skill had more than doubly descended to his son, for Urashima was the most skillful fisher in all that country side, and could catch more Bonito and Tai in a day than his comrades could in a week. But in the little fishing village, more than for being a clever fisher of the sea was he known for his kind heart. In his whole life he had never hurt anything, either great or small…
